Abstract

Type 3c diabetes, also known as pancreatogenic diabetes, is a form of secondary diabetes which occurs when primary pancreatic disorders damage the pancreatic islets of Langerhans leading to endocrine pancreatic dysfunction. Type 3c is often misdiagnosed as Type 2 diabetes (or Type 1 diabetes); however, it is remarkably different in cause, clinical presentation, treatment, and prognosis. Furthermore, patients with type 3c diabetes are more prone to experience complications and death related to hypoglycemic events. This chapter describes the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, approach to diagnosis, and treatment of pancreatogenic diabetes.
