Abstract
This chapter discusses teacher education in Hungary: namely, national traditions in the field, the current state of play, and changes in global and European education policy, as well as local education reforms. Firstly, this chapter summarises the main historical trends in the development of the Hungarian school system and its impact on the teaching profession. Then, the current situation is presented by focusing on two interrelated factors—autonomy and professionalism—with regard to their impact on teacher policy, teacher education, and teachers’ professional development. The most important problems and challenges are presented from the perspective of autonomy and professionalism. Finally, the most pressing current problems in Hungary’s teacher education and continuous professional development are summarised, along with suggestions and possible directions for positive change.
