Abstract

From Harlan Stone’s initial description in 1983 of abbreviated surgery in critically ill multi-trauma patients to the current techniques and technology now available, the tenets of damage control surgery continue to be control of hemorrhage and gastrointestinal contamination. A term borrowed from maneuvers to stabilize and battle-damaged ships, damage control surgery (and more broadly damage control resuscitation) is an important tool in a trauma surgeon’s armamentarium. For critically ill trauma patients, performance of a brief temporary repair of traumatic injuries and delaying definitive management until after physiologic correction may improve outcomes and survivability.
