Synovial Pathology in the Knee

MRI-Arthroscopy Correlations

Abstract

Inflammation of synovial tissue within the knee can result in pain, swelling, and decreased range of motion, thereby limiting a patient’s function. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic etiologies can be the cause of dysfunction. Neoplastic causes include pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), synovial chondromatosis, and lipoma arborescens/synovial lipomatosis. Suspicion of synovial pathology warrants further workup, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to effectively evaluate synovial tissue. This chapter will present case-based descriptions of the aforementioned synovial pathologies to guide the management and treatment of each diagnosis.
