Abstract

Staging laparoscopy is a useful tool to adequately stage gastric cancer patients. It displayed a higher accuracy in detecting peritoneal involvement than computed tomography and positron emission tomography scans. The indications may vary across countries and different health systems, but there is a substantial agreement on performing staging laparoscopy in those patients needing neoadjuvant chemotherapy. It has been reported that the yield of staging laparoscopy ranges between 51.6–13.7%, confirming its importance in staging gastric cancer.
