Abstract

Prophylactic surgery is novel for urologic surgery. It is used for preventing the functional loss of the organ, serious medical or surgical conditions, malignant degeneration or to improve aesthetical conditions. However, to the best of our knowledge, preventive or prophylactic surgery has not been properly defined in the urology speciality. Being aware of this, we described prophylactic urological surgeries by combining with the detailed published literature and our clinical practice below. However, we know the difficulties, such as organ sparing surgical modalities, are recently preferable in urology practice and legal/ethical challenge of prophylactic surgical procedures, which is discussed in another chapter of this book. The difficulty is describing the prophylaxis with combining organ function preservation. We hope that the compiled chapter would be a pioneer in its field and would be the pathfinder for clinicians.
