Abstract

This chapter outlines the underlying etiologies, evaluation, and management of patients with large bowel obstruction. Clinical history, physical examination, and imaging in the form of abdominal plain films and/or computed tomography (CT) scan can determine the etiology of an obstruction and allow for an individualized treatment approach. Initial management focusses on bowel decompression and addressing fluid and electrolyte abnormalities, while definitive management depends on the underlying etiology and the clinical status of the patient.
