Appendiceal Neoplasms

Abstract

Appendiceal neoplasms are rare. Their incidence ranges between 0.12 and 1.3 per one million population. The diagnosis is frequently made incidentally following appendectomy for presumed appendicitis after histologic review of the resected specimen, occurring in approximately 1% of all appendectomies. A diagnosis of appendiceal adenocarcinoma generally prompts a right hemicolectomy, except when tumor invasion is limited to the submucosa. Low- and high-grade mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs, HAMNs) limited to the appendix can be treated with appendectomy alone. Appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors less than 2 cm in diameter can be treated with appendectomy alone, while incomplete resection, high-risk features, or larger size should prompt consideration of right hemicolectomy.
