Abstract

Although, globally in number surpassed by the sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is still – by many – considered to be the golden standard in bariatric surgery with longstanding positive effects on body weight and obesity-related comorbidities. This chapter will discuss the outcomes from RYGB for comorbidity resolution (type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and infertility) and its positive effects on cancer risk, overall mortality, quality of life, and health care costs. Throughout the chapter, these results will be compared with the other commonly used bariatric procedures.
