Abstract
In 2000 an international group of organizations and individuals adopted the Earth Charter at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris. The charter is a declaration of principles for a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society. At the initiative of personalities such as Maurice Strong and Mikhail Gorbachev a worldwide consultation process was started to draft a text. The Earth Charter Commission approved the draft during a meeting held at the headquarters of UNESCO in March 2000 and officially launched the charter in June 2000 with a ceremony at the Peace Palace in The Hague (the Netherlands).
