Abstract
The United Nations established the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1948. It is a special agency within the United Nations that is focused on international public health (www.who.int). The objective of the WHO is the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health. According to its constitution the organization will do this through acting as the directing and coordinating authority on international health work, international collaboration, assistance to governments in strengthening health services, providing technical assistance, and in emergencies necessary aid upon the request or with the acceptance of governments. The WHO also seeks to stimulate and advance work to eradicate epidemic, endemic, and other diseases.
