Abstract
The NAFLD has attained 25% global prevalence as one of the common chronic liver diseases. It is associated with some other diseases like metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus and advancement to cirrhosis. Pathogenesis of this chronic liver disease is very complex as many mechanisms are involved. NAFLD is not a single injury but a combination of wounds which lead to hepatic damage, i.e., oxidative stress, increase in lipid, inflammation, insulin resistance, lipotoxicity, apoptosis and fibrosis. Carotenoids have protective actions which can be used in liver therapy and against lung diseases like tuberculosis, asthma and lung cancer. Some famous carotenoids useful in blocking the development of lung cancer and NAFLD are crocetin, lycopene, fucoxanthin, carotene, astaxanthin, lutein and cryptoxanthin. They act as anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrosis, lipid lowering and insulin-sensitizing agent. As there is lack of approved exercises, drug and food administration for the treatment of NAFLD, dietary carotenoids may be recommended because of their caring paraphernalia on development of NAFLD.
