Abstract

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common and potentially serious condition. This teaching script leads the reader through a systematic approach to the initial evaluation of an acute bleed and the subsequent inpatient management. We emphasize determining the clinical severity of a patient with gastrointestinal bleeding. We highlight the consulting services needed in the care of these patients and what plans will need to be made after stabilization.
