Abstract

The patient story is a critical, hallmark aspect of integrative and functional nutrition practice. When a patient tells their story, the integrative practitioner takes a careful timeline to note any clues leading the clinician to the root cause of a health problem. The patient story facilitates the establishment of a strong therapeutic relationship between the patient and healthcare provider, and the story continues to unfold as they work together to resolve the patient’s health issues. The story contributes to an evidence-based healthcare approach as the clinician can use the information as part of their clinical expertise as well as applying it to the existing scientific research. Essentially, the patient’s story is put into the context of a mind-body-spirit approach to healthcare that accounts for the foundational knowledge of the patient, their lifestyle, and its contribution to their physical status, as well as the spiritual and community aspects of the patient’s health. All together, the patient’s story is the narrative that facilitates a comprehensive nutrition and health assessment and informs the most effective, personalized care plan for the patient.
