Abstract

Chapter 7 discusses the reasons for the environmental classism laid out earlier, in terms of a number of theories. Seven broad explanations for environmental classism which have both an individual aspect and a structural aspect are discussed. These include class power imbalances, classist discrimination, income inequality, mutual hostility between workers and environmentalists, the separation of environmental and social aspects of life, the focus and composition of the mainstream environmental movement and limited democracy.
