Abstract
This introduction frames the Ecuadorian case in the larger debate on the Latin American left turn of the early twenty-first century; it introduces the chapters of this volume; and it reflects on the democratic gaps and authoritarian trends during Correa’s government—emphasizing the restrictions on liberties and the breach of political and institutional rules. The chapter finishes by pointing out the causes that converged to prevent the consolidation of the Citizens’ Revolution as a long-term political project: first, the poor economic situation caused by the negligence of Correa’s government and by the fall in oil prices; second, the fact that the process was sustained almost exclusively by the President’s personalism; and third, the lack of a broad consensus among political actors and the confrontation with social organizations. The latter happened despite continuous appeals to citizen participation and the “process of change” that the Citizens’ Revolution aimed to generate.
