Abstract
The scientific enterprise is being driven, increasingly, by collaborative approaches. This chapter describes the scientific goals, technological capabilities, and societal trends that are contributing to the steady increase in both collaborative and integrative science. The chapter introduces the immense scientific promise of these scientific approaches, and what is needed to maximize scientific success and overcome common challenges. The Science of Team Science (SciTS) field is introduced, including its goal to generate evidence of inform effective practices in team science. A history of the field is provided along with a summary of key questions currently being explored. The chapter introduces and defines key terms that are used throughout the book—including “team science,” “cross-disciplinary science,” “integrative science,” and “convergence science.” It then provides an overview of the structure and content of the book. It provides a summary of each section of the book—focusing on themes such as team formation, leadership, communication and coordination, training, and institutional policies and structure—and describes the types of chapters that readers will find in the handbook—including State of the Science, Practice-Oriented, and Special Topics—and the unique knowledge and perspectives offered by each type of chapter.
