Handbook of Borderline Personality Disorder in Children and Adolescents

Abstract

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is both a common and serious psychiatric disorder. Early theories of its etiology were derived from the writings of psychoanalaytic thinkers. In general, it appears that borderline personality disorder is an admixture of childhood adversity, a vulnerable temperament, and a triggering event—which leads to a full-blown case of BPD.
