Abstract

The primary and sequential metabolism by the component organisms from 2 defined competitive exclusion (CE) cultures (CF-I and CF-II) and a characterized CE culture (CF-III) that were derived from anaerobic continuous-flow cultures without pH control were analyzed, using gas-liquid chromatography to detect volatile fatty acids (VFA) and nonvolatile fatty acids (NVFA) produced in anaerobic peptone-yeast cultures with 1% concentrations of amino acid and carbohydrate substrates.
