Girls at Puberty

Abstract

The biosocial approach to the study of adolescent development offers a wealth of opportunities for collaboration between clinical specialists and social and behavioral scientists. This entire volume is based on that premise and represents a major step in that direction. The emergence of behavioral endocrinology as a discipline marks the conjoint interests of psychologists and endocrinologists in both the study of animals and humans (Beach, 1975). In pediatrics and adolescent medicine, the widespread use of Tanner (1962) staging of secondary sex characteristics sets the stage for the study of physiological and psychological correlates and the effects of pubertal growth on psychosocial functioning. In the clinical realm, psychiatrists are able to identify the interplay of maturational and behavioral events on a continuum from normative variation to psychopathologic responses.
