Abstract
Age-related changes in the cardiovascular system, overt and occult cardiovascular disease, and decreased physical activity affect cardiovascular function in older persons. With aging, there is a loss of myocytes in both the left and right ventricles with a progressive increase in myocyte cell volume per nucleus in both ventricles.1 There is also a progressive decrease in the number of pacemaker cells in the sinus node, with only 10% of the number of cells present at age 20 remaining at age 75.2
