Abstract

Skin aging is accompanied by biochemical, morphological and Theological changes (Banga, 1966, 1972; Fleischmajer et al., 1973; Hall, 1976; Viidik, 1973, 1982). Many people desire to reduce these senile changes as there are an increase of collagen concentration (Gillman, 1970) with a concomitant decrease of total collagen due to skin thinning (Viidik, 1982), a decrease of soluble collagen (Harris and Sjoerdsma, 1966; Verzár, 1964) by higher crosslinking of collagen, leading to an increasing fibre stiffness (Bailey and Robins, 1973). Moreover, there is a loss of ground substance (proteoglycans (PG), mainly hyaluronate and dermatan sulphate, as first stated by Clausen (1962)), and therefore we observe a decreasing hydration of the matrix by dysregulation of homeostasis. The content of elastin increases (Pearce and Grimmer, 1972), and there are pronounced changes in the network of elastic fibres (Viidik, 1982). All these changes are manifested phenomenologically in the formation of more wrinkles, increasing dryness and, mechanically, in a loss of elasticity. Changes of the matrix result from genetically scheduled enzymatic mechanisms (Hayflick, 1982), but more often from stochastic processes with an endogenous or an exogenous origin.
