Abstract
Dephosphorylation of nucleoside 5′-monophosphates is the first and irreversible reaction of purine nucleotide catabolism.1 This reaction is catalyzed by 5′-nucleotidase 5′-ribonucleotide phosphohydrolase, EC 3.1.3.5. Most of this activity is present on the external surface of the cell. This activity has no clear role in intracellular nucleotide catabolism. However, recent studies indicate that cytoplasmic 5′-nucleotidase may have an important role in intracellular nucleotide degradation.2
