New Approaches and Techniques for Studying Bivalve Larvae

  • Chapter
Culture of Marine Invertebrate Animals

Abstract

Since the appearance of the classic works of Loosanoff and Davis in the 1950’s and 1960’s, interest in the larvae of bivalve mollusks has increased greatly. Their comprehensive report on culture techniques (Loosanoff and Davis, 1963) is still the most important single work in the field, and should be consulted by anyone planning to work with bivalve larvae. The culturing practices outlined by Walne (1964) should be studied. In more recent years some new terminology and advanced analytical techniques have been introduced by Chanley (1965), Chanley and Van Engel (1969), and Chanley and Andrews (197l). An important study by Pilkington and Fretter (1970) on prosobranch veligers also contains information relevant to feeding of larval bivalves.
