Abstract

The East Greenland Caledonides extend for 1200 km between latitudes 70–82°N in a coast-parallel belt up to 250 km wide (Figs 7.1 and 7.2). The greater part comprises crystalline complexes, made up of a variety of gneissic and granitic rocks together with metasedimentary rock types. Late Proterozoic (Eleonore Bay Group) and Lower Palaeozoic sequences outcrop mainly between latitudes 72–74°N, while a broad zone of post-Caledonian sediments (Devonian—Cretaceous) covers eastern coastal areas (70–75°N). Tertiary basalts hide the continuation of the Caledonides south of 70°N.
