Abstract

There is a large body of research suggesting a strong empirical relationship between violent acts and alcohol and other drug use. Many studies report that well over 50% of violent offenses—homicide, assault, rape—are accompanied by the consumption of alcohol, drugs, or both, by perpetrators and victims (see Collins, 1989; Greenberg, 1981; Murdoch, Pihl, & Ross, 1990; Pernanen, 1991; Reiss & Roth, 1993). While there are strong public perceptions embracing and reinforcing this link (Fagan, 1990; MacAndrew & Edgerton, 1969), the empirical association may be akin to the emperor’s clothes—less substantial than apparent, however revealing. Without a careful analysis and interpretation of the meaning of the empirical relationship, it is easy for lay and professional audiences alike to draw the premature and unwarranted conclusion that alcohol and drugs are a primary cause of violent crimes.
