Abstract

There is accumulating evidence that H4biopterin is synthesized in cells which do not depend on H4biopterin cofactor but undergo cytokine directed proliferation1. In this case, H4biopterin has a function which is apparently unrelated to its known cofactor role. It modulates the clonal expansion of T cells2–4 and the proliferation of erythroid cells5,6. Closer analysis has shown that it enhances the affinity of the IL-2 receptor complex to its ligand and subsequently affects various aspects of signal transmission7.
