Introduction
Although anger is considered to be a fundamental human emotion, its regulation and management often present problems for many individuals. The number of anger management programs available for youth has increased dramatically over the past 10–15 years, with many of these programs being based in school settings. The purpose of this entry is to review the variety of strategies used to assist adolescents in regulating and managing their anger and expressing anger in nonaggressive ways. We will begin with a more detailed discussion of anger and why it is considered such a potentially problematic emotion for children and adolescents.
Definitions and Scope
In many respects, anger has been an elusive construct to define and measure. It is generally recognized that anger is a multidimensional construct involving affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions (Spielberger, Reheiser, & Sydeman, 1995).
