Abstract
A patient is admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) but after a time derives no significant medical benefit from remaining there. The patient’s attending physicians begin establishing a plan for transfer (to another section of the hospital, to a skilled nursing establishment, or to a rehabilitation center or other facility). Members of the patient’s family refuse to allow the transfer, threatening legal action if the patient is moved from the ICU. A legal nightmare is about to engulf the hospital and the health care professionals—or maybe not.
