Abstract

Chickens have been important to genetic research since its very beginning. In 1898, William Bateson had begun studies involving crosses of several breeds of poultry characterized by different feather color, skin color, comb type, toe number, broody behavior, etc. When the reports of Correns and DeVries brought Mendel’s work to light, Bateson immediately realized the applicability of the Mendelian laws to his studies with chickens. He reported his crossing results to the Evolution Committee of the Royal Society (Bateson, 1902) and was thus the first to demonstrate that animals as well as plants conformed to the Mendelian rules of inheritance.
