Abstract
Squamous cell carcinoma is by far the commonest neoplasm of the larynx, arising directly in many cases from the squamous epithelium covering the vocal cords; it also frequently arises from the covering epithelium of other parts of the larynx. It is well established that precancerous states (which can be recognized microscopically) frequently precede squamous carcinoma. The fully developed tumour may show any one of a large number of histological variations depending on, among other features, the appearances of its proliferating cells and the amount of keratin produced by them. In addition there are two special forms of squamous cell carcinoma — verrucous squamous cell carcinoma and spindle cell carcinoma — which will be dealt with separately.
