Scandinavian coral reefs

Abstract

To understand the true nature and variability of deep-water coral reefs, it is necessary to review as much detailed information as possible. In this chapter I have tried to review as many first-hand observations as possible and to discuss their relevance to understanding the whereabouts of reefs in Scandinavian waters. The chapter starts with a description of fjord-dwelling reefs and continues with reefs on the continental shelf, especially off mid-Norway. Of particular significance are the reefs associated with hydrocarbon fields, like the Kristin and Morvin fields, and corals found inside pockmarks, even in the North Sea, near the Troll gas-field. The chapter ends with a short review of coral colonies found on human-made structures in the North Sea (Figure 4.0).
