Abstract
This article begins by describing the legal foundations of business models in the software industry. It then introduces the Free Software (FS) and Open Source Software (OSS) movements, and surveys various business models found in the FS/OSS based on them. A special emphasis is placed on the applicability of these business models to industries that produce dependable systems. This article concludes by exploring a FS/OSS co-op model that could enable the development of software components for dependable systems.
