In 2003, the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) and Australian Health Ethics Commission (AHEC) released the report of their joint Inquiry, Essentially Yours: The Protection of Human Genetic Information in Australia (ALRC 96) (the Inquiry). The terms of reference of the Inquiry were to consider how best to: – protect privacy – protect against unfair discrimination and – ensure the highest ethical standards in research and practice.1
