Feldspars are the most abundant mineral group in the Earth’s crust, mainly because they form at a wide range of temperature and pressure encountered in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary environments. Feldspars in sedimentary rocks can be of detrital and diagenetic origins. Feldspars are a group of alumino-silicate minerals whose structures are composed of corner-sharing AlO4 and SiO4 tetrahedra linked in an infinite, three-dimensional array. Charge balancing, M cations with radius greater than 1.0Å occupy large, irregular cavities in the tetrahedral framework. The general chemical formula of feldspars is MT 4O8, where T is Al and Si, M is Na and/or K for alkali feldspars [(K,Na)AlSi3O8] and Ca for plagioclase (CaAl2SiO8). There are several polymorphs of K-feldspar minerals, including microcline (triclinic), orthoclase (monoclinic) and sanidine (monoclinic). Si/Al is ordered in orthoclase but disordered in sanidine. The Na-plagioclase (NaAlSi3O8) is albite, whereas Ca-plagioclase is...
