Abstract

The fierce conflict in British-held Palestine between Arabs and Jews, each striving to establish themselves as the obvious successors to the colonial regime, resulted in Britain taking three major decisions in 1947. First, the UN was asked to produce a solution; second, Britain was in any event going to leave; and third, she was not going to try to enforce a proposal which was not acceptable to both disputants. The problem was, of course, about the most intractable which could be imagined. But Britain’s response to it clearly signified that she was no longer the world power of former years.
