Choice of Approach for Laparoscopic Common Duct Exploration

  • Chapter
Book cover The SAGES Manual of Strategic Decision Making

When laparoscopic cholecystectomy is undertaken in the presence of known common duct stones, laparoscopic common duct exploration is generally part of the planned procedure. Chapters 5 and 6 explored alternatives in the management of choledocholithiasis, including the role of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). This chapter deals specifically with the relative merits of the transcystic duct approach versus laparoscopic choledochotomy (a procedure that more nearly mimics what was done during open surgery for this problem).
