Abstract

A pot experiment was conducted in the greenhouse to investigate the effects of subsoil nitrogen (N) and split N application to surface soil on grain protein concentration (GPC) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Molineux). The experiment tested the hypothesis that split N application has an equivalent effect to subsoil N on GPC. Split N application at tillering and booting or subsoil N application after flowering produced higher GPC than other N treatments. The apparent contribution of remobilised N to grain was highest in the control plants and in the plants that received 150 mg N in the topsoil at sowing. The experiment showed that as long as the N was not leached from the root zone, split N application to the topsoil or subsoil N application has an equivalent effect on GPC of wheat
