Abstract

The production of miniaturized moulding tools or mould inserts of glass and sintered carbide is a field of research at the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology at the University of Braunschweig, Germany. The cost effective mass production of micro parts or micro structures by micro moulding is dependent upon the availability of high quality micro moulds. These moulding tools can be used for production of micro parts by hot embossing or micro injection moulding or micro forming processes.

Our challenge was to manufacture 3D structures in glass or sintered carbide with a smooth surface and as minimal edge chipping as possible. The technology of our choice was microgrinding, therefore this paper contributes to the understanding of a μ-grinding process technology, and its application for micro moulding tool production.
