Abstract
The isolation of estrone in 1929 independently by Doisy (1929) in the United States and by Butenandt (1929) in Germany made possible the classic experiment of Lacassagne (1932) in which mammary tumors in male mice were induced by giving injections of estrone. This experiment established a causal relationship between estrogenic hormones and mammary tumorigenesis. The proof that hormones can influence the growth of cancer was derived from experiments by Huggins and Clark (1940) on tumors of the prostate of the dog.
