Abstract

There are four basic operations. These are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division indicated by the symbols +, −, × and ÷ respectively. Sometimes the multiplication sign is omitted or replaced by the word ‘of’ and the division sign may be replaced by a line as in 3/4 (3 divided by 4) or a solidus (3/4). It is assumed that the reader is familiar with these basic operations.
