Abstract

The 1992 evaluation of Nuclear Data Sheets for A = 56 (92Hu07) has been updated using experimental nuclear structure data and decay data available before November 1997. The information for⁵⁶Ca, 56Sc,⁵⁶Ti,⁵⁶V,⁵⁶Cr,⁵⁶Mn,⁵⁶Fe,⁵⁶Co,⁵⁶Ni,⁵⁶Cu, and⁵⁶Zn from various reaction and decay experiments together with their adopted levels and γ transition properties is summarized and presented.

Highly precise measurements of the relative gamma-ray intensities for 56Mn and 72Ga

Precise relative γ-ray intensities of ⁵⁶Mn and ⁷²Ga produced by neutron irradiation of natural Mn₃O₄ and enriched ⁷¹Ga₂O₃ (99.8%) were measured by an HPGe detector with highly-precisely calibrated detection efficiencies. As both nuclides exhibit no β branch to the ground state, the absolute emission probabilities of the 846.8 keV γ ray for ⁵⁶Mn and 834.0 keV γ ray for ⁷²Ga were determined to be 0.9888±0.0014 and 0.9553±0.0005, respectively.
Low-energy magnetic dipole response in 56Fe from high-resolution electron scattering

The ⁵⁶Fe(e, e′) reaction has been studied for excitation energies up to about 8 MeV and momentum transfers q≃0.4–0.55 fm⁻¹ at the Darmstadt electron linear accelerator (DALINAC) with kinematics emphasizing M1 transitions. Additional data have been taken for q≃0.8–1.7 fm⁻¹ at the electron accelerator NIKHEF, Amsterdam. A PWBA analysis allows spin and parity determination of the excited states. For M1 excitations, transition strengths are derived with a DWBA analysis using shell-model form factors. The resulting B(M1) strength distribution is compared to shell-model calculations employing different effective interactions. The form factor of the prominent low-lying M1 transition at 3.449 MeV demonstrates its dominant orbital nature. It represents a major part of the scissors mode in ⁵⁶Fe.
