2022, Zoologischer AnzeigerCitation Excerpt :The silvery mole-rat Heliophobius argenteocinereus (Bathyergidae, Rodentia), a representative of subterranean rodents whose lifestyle has been sufficiently well studied (Jarvis & Sale 1971; Nowak 1999; Bennett & Faulkes 2000; Šumbera et al., 2003; 2007; Woods & Kilpatrick 2005; Malewski et al., 2018), was also used for comparison. The studied species belong to phylogenetically distant orders, which was shown at the level of morphology and molecular phylogenetics (Shoshani & McKenna 1998). That is why the similarity in the structure of their pelage can be defined as convergent, due to adaptation to an underground lifestyle.

2021, Molecular Phylogenetics and EvolutionCitation Excerpt :The phylogenetic relationships within Laurasiatheria have been addressed using extensive DNA sequences, resulting in the proposals of many conflicting hypotheses for these six orders. Currently, with the exception of a consensus for the earliest divergence of Eulipotyphla and the grouping of Carnivora and Pholidota (the Ferae, Shoshani and McKenna, 1998), the relationships among the other laurasiatherian orders remains uncertain. Two of the most popular hypotheses have been proposed regarding which order is the second-branching laurasiatherian lineage, i.e., the “Fereuungulata” hypothesis supporting the second-diverging Chiroptera (Doronina et al., 2017; Emerling et al., 2015; Esselstyn et al., 2017; Foley et al., 2016; Gatesy et al., 2017; Liu et al., 2017; Madsen et al., 2001; Murphy et al., 2001a,b, 2004; Scally et al., 2001; Song et al., 2012; Zhou et al., 2012) (Fig. 1a-c) and the “Pegasoferae” hypothesis supporting the second-diverging Cetartiodactyla (dos Reis et al., 2012; Lartillot, 2013; McCormack et al., 2012; Murphy et al., 2007; Nishihara et al., 2006; Romiguier et al., 2010; Seim et al., 2013; Zhang et al., 2013; Zhou et al., 2011) (Fig. 1d and e).
