Conical electron tomography of a chemical synapse: Vesicles docked to the active zone are hemi-fused
2006, Biophysical JournalCitation Excerpt :Therefore, the demonstration of hemi-fusion in the region of contact between vesicles and active zone revealed here suggests that the fusion-through-hemifusion model is consistent with how neurotransmitters are released in chemical synapses of the neocortex. The preparation of the specimens has been described (21–23). We sacrificed three Sprague-Dawley adult rats 90–120 days of age and fixed by perfusion with 3% glutaraldehyde, and 4% paraformaldehyde in 0.2 M cacodylate buffer at pH 7.4.
