Abstract

The Sima de los Huesos site of the Atapuerca complex near Burgos, Spain contains the skeletal remains of at least 28 individuals in a mud breccia underlying an accumulation of the Middle Pleistocene cave bear (U. deningeri). Earlier dating estimates of 200 to 320 kyr were based on U-series and ESR methods applied to bones, made inaccurate by unquantifiable uranium cycling. We report here on a new discovery within the Sima de los Huesos of human bones stratigraphically underlying an in situ speleothem. U-series analyses of the speleothem shows the lower part to be at isotopic U/Th equilibrium, translating to a firm lower limit of 350 kyr for the SH hominids. Finite dates on the upper part suggest a speleothem growth rate of c. 1 cm/32 kyr. This rate, along with paleontological constraints, place the likely age of the hominids in the interval of 400 to 600 kyr.

The U-series dating results for sample GB17-3 are shown in Table 2. The calcite fragment has a 238U content of 87.1 ± 0.2 ppb, which is similar to values obtained for other speleothem samples from the Cueva Mayor–Cueva del Silo karst system (e.g., Bischoff et al., 2003; Martínez-Pillado et al., 2014), as well as a relatively high 232Th content of 193,732 ± 3900 ppt and a low 230Th/232Th ratio of 7.89 ± 0.17. As the latter ratio is indicative of some detrital particles in the calcium carbonate matrix, the final U-series age has been calculated after including a detrital correction.

Uranium-series dates from pure calcites are generally considered to be accurate and precise, but datable calcite is not present at Xujiayao. Unlike calcite, bones are susceptible to post-burial U migration, thus, U-series dating of bones and teeth is prone to producing substantially young ages as demonstrated by U-series dating of intercalated calcite formations and excavated fossil bones in archeological sites (Bischoff et al., 2003; Shen et al., 2004a, b, 2010; 2014; Grün et al., 2014). Technical limitations and the low resolution of measurements made more than 30 years ago therefore mean that initial U-series dating of teeth from Xujiayao may have underestimated their true ages.
