ABSTRACT
Medical tourism is nowadays one of the fastest developing branches of tourism. Care for health is important for contemporary societies. At the same time there arises care for the environment, social equity, and economic growth of regions, the three main pillars of sustainable development. On the other hand sustainability is a difficult and demanding idea which provokes many problems and misunderstandings when implemented. Tourism seems to be one of the means for areas’ sustainable development, as well as some innovations, especially those connected with creating attitudes. Unfortunately medical tourism is not often conceived and developed as a sustainable one. The aim of the chapter is to focus on understanding how innovations can support (or limit) the development of medical tourism while maintaining the paradigm of sustainable development.
