Activated astroglia during chronic inflammation in Alzheimer's disease-Do they neglect their neurosupportive roles?
2010, Mutation Research - Fundamental and Molecular Mechanisms of MutagenesisImmune Response in the Brain: Glial Response and Cytokine Production
2008, NeuroImmune BiologyCitation Excerpt :There is published evidence that endothelial cells [50], astrocytes [41], and pericytes [51] can process and present protein antigens to primed CD4-positive T cells in vitro, but the specific role of these cells as APCs in vivo is still unclear. Astrocytes do not usually express class II MHC antigens in vivo, even in the presence of inflammatory cells [42]. Since microglia have functional characteristics very similar to macrophages and can be induced to express class II MHC antigens as discussed above, microglia are the most possible candidates for APCs in the CNS.
