Oxygen sensitivity of methanogenesis in rumen and anaerobic digester populations using mass spectrometry

Summary

Membrane inlet mass spectrometry has been used to determine the effect of oxygen on methanogenesis in samples from a rumen and an anaerobic digester. A membrane covered Photobacterium probe, in conjunction with the mass spectrometer, was used to measure low (> 30 nM) levels of dissolved oxygen. Methanogenesis in both systems was inhibited by dissolved oxygen concentrations below 30 nM. In samples from the rumen, oxygen inhibition of methanogenesis was fully reversible; in anaerobic digester samples short term irreversibility was observed.
