Abstract

This paper reviews linear and non-linear systems and the Volterra series representation. The Volterra series has applications in non-linear system modelling. The Volterra series expansion represents an important model for the representation, analysis, and synthesis of non-linear systems. The first order and second order Volterra systems are reviewed, and the determination of the Volterra kernels is done using two methods. Then the Volterra series is applied to mechanical systems i.e. simple pendulum and a non-linear spring mass system to observe the effect of incorporating non-linearity.
