Abstract

Grid technology has emerged as a powerful tool to increase the capabilities of e-learning frameworks. Learning services are fundamental components representing functionalities that can be easily reused without knowing the details of how services have been implemented. On the one hand, a problem that still remains unsolved is how to use and integrate low-level learning services to compose more complex high-level services or tools that make sense to both tutors and learners. On the other hand, the approaches that are currently used to implement an e-learning framework developed with learning services based on the Grid are limited in semantic expressiveness for matching services and only support keyword based search. Due to the complexity of these two related problems, the paper focuses on the second one by proposing an initial model for Semantic Description of Grid based Learning Services based on OWL–S (Semantic Markup for Web Services) that facilitates learning service providers the description and categorization of atomic, simple or compose services and allow service requesters to specify their needs. This model aims at offering a mechanism for automatic Grid Learning Service discovery, invocation, composition and interoperation.
